About

Reflect was filmed in the ancient woodland of Grim’s Dyke at Old Redding in Harrow Weald, Greater London, UK on 28th January 2014. The poem was written in Cornwall, UK, and the voice recorded in Charlottesville, VA, USA.

The word ‘Weald’ is Old English in origin, meaning woodland. It was recorded as ‘waldis’ in 1303 and ‘welde’ in 1382, but the name Harrow Weald is not recorded until 1553. It was then part of the great Forest of Middlesex.

Grim’s Ditch or Grim’s Dyke or Grimes Dike is an earthwork in what is now known as the London Borough of Harrow close to the Hertfordshire border. The area and woodland takes its name from the pre-historic earthwork.

Grim’s Dyke had generally been dated as fifth to sixth century, but an excavation in 1979 produced a radiocarbon date of 50 AD +/- 80 years, which while not conclusive suggests a much earlier date. It may have been built by the Catuvellauni tribe as a defence against the Romans.

A Stone Marker created by the Harrow Heritage Trust reads; ‘This ancient earthwork once stretched through Harrow for some six miles from Cuckoo Hill, Pinner to Pear Wood, Stanmore, but now only parts remain. Named after Grim, another name for the English King of the gods, and also the god of death, Woden.
